Letter copybook of Charles Gibbons Davis, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, kept while working for the Welsbach Incandescent Gas Light Company of Gloucester, New Jersey, in California at the Twenty-Third Industrial Exhibition of the Mechanics' Institute of San Francisco, and while traveling and demonstrating the product in other California cities, 1888. The copybook comprises 85 letters (128 pages), dated August 3-November 26, 1888. Additionally there are 14 letters (25 pages) and 8 additional pieces (8 pages) of printed and manuscript ephemeral material laid into the volume. The correspondence consists of inter-company letters, written by Davis, mostly to W.E. Barrows (General Manager), W.J. Gregory (an engineer), and John L. Stewart (Secretary-Treasurer). Other letters are written to other employees of the firm. The laid-in material pertain primarily to the case of Major George Q. White, a relation of Davis, who was entitled to a small homestead tract for his service in the Civil War. On party, a Mr. Moses, has interest in the claim, which was never taken up by Major White, and Davis is handling the transaction to Moses for White's daughter.
